In India, the media regulation and its approach has always been in the lime light for its coverage for various reasons. Indian media considered to be the fourth pillar of our democracy has drawn flaks from various media critics and also from the public and judiciary itself for its coverage of 26/11 terror attack or be it the unethical and fake sting operation of a school teacher. All such media coverage consequently comes under the scanner of the government and the need for some stricter norms are felt at time to time.
Media’s unstoppable coverage of Arushi murder case is also such an attempt which has drawn so many questions on the role of media in the society. Going behind to a single event for so long only for the sake of TRP is so pathetic in today’s Indian media. There’s only one mission for these media institutions that is; to raise their TRP but they have forgotten the real duty of disseminating news of national interest. Anna Hazare’s campaign against corruption was given such hype that there was a race among the TV news channels for the maximum coverage. But the real fact is that now a day, not a single channel is giving any follow-up of that event. This has also questioned the credibility and the real duty of the media in India and the I&B ministry is going to lay some new guidelines for these channels to curb the amount of coverage being shown.
The various bills regarding the media censorship has been controversial at times but the government has no other choice but to curtail the freedom of media. One such bill was the Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill of 2006; it was widely criticized for its draconian provisions that gave sweeping powers to the government to cripple the media through censorship. Media has been working as a profitable industry where only profit is the main goal but not the public welfare. This attitude has ruined this institution at a large scale and leaving behind only a heap of profiting ideology. The new guidelines which I&B ministry is considering will surely test the whole media industry of India and we have to just wait and watch what will be the outcome of these new guidelines if these are passed into an act.
